Bucket temperature
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004063
The temperature of the sea surface measured by collecting a sample of seawater in a bucket and then inserting a thermometer. This traditional method of sea surface temperature measurement was widely used before the advent of more sophisticated remote sensing techniques. Bucket temperatures are subject to biases from evaporative cooling and heat exchange with the air.
