Climatic discontinuity
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004359
An abrupt and persistent shift in the average value or variability of a climatic variable, such as temperature or precipitation. This change marks a transition from one statistical climatic state to another, rather than being part of a gradual trend or cyclical fluctuation. The Great Salinity Anomaly of the 1960s in the North Atlantic is an example of such a shift in oceanographic conditions.
