Comminution
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004540
The process of reducing solid materials into smaller particles through mechanical action such as grinding, crushing, or impact. In atmospheric science, this process is a primary source of mineral dust aerosols, where wind erosion and glacial activity break down rocks and soils into fine particulates. These particles can then be suspended in the atmosphere and transported over long distances, influencing cloud formation and radiative balance.
