Contour microclimate

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010445

The part of a site's microclimate that arises directly from small-scale irregularities in the ground surface, such as hollows, mounds, ridges and gentle slopes. Cold air drains into low spots on calm, clear nights, so hollows collect frost while nearby higher ground stays warmer, and exposed crests receive stronger wind. A frost hollow is the standard example.
