Cotton-region shelter

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004731

An early standardized enclosure for housing meteorological instruments, designed to shield them from direct solar radiation and precipitation while allowing for adequate ventilation. It was a small, wooden, louvered box, painted white and mounted on a post, with its door facing north in the Northern Hemisphere to prevent sunlight from striking the thermometers when read. This design was a precursor to the modern Stevenson screen, which features a double-roof and other improvements.
