Exposure of instruments

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010501

The specific placement and orientation of meteorological instruments to obtain measurements that are representative of the surrounding atmosphere. Proper exposure requires siting instruments away from obstructions like buildings and trees that could alter airflow, temperature, or precipitation readings. For example, thermometers are housed in a ventilated instrument shelter (Stevenson screen) at a standard height of 1.25 to 2 meters above the ground.
