Instrument exposure

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006570

The placement and positioning of a meteorological instrument relative to its immediate surroundings, which affects the representativeness of its measurements. Proper exposure requires locating instruments away from obstructions like buildings and trees that can alter airflow, temperature, and precipitation patterns. For example, the World Meteorological Organization specifies that a rain gauge should be placed in an open area, with the distance to any object being at least twice the height of that object.
