Rain-gauge shield

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008384

A device placed around a rain gauge to minimize errors in precipitation measurement caused by wind. It alters the airflow over the gauge opening, reducing turbulence and preventing raindrops from being carried away or into the gauge by updrafts or downdrafts. Common designs include the Alter shield, which consists of a series of freely swinging slats, or the Nipher shield, a conical solid structure.
