Grass minimum

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006033

The lowest temperature recorded overnight by a thermometer placed horizontally just above the tips of short grass. This reading indicates the minimum temperature reached at ground level, which is often lower than the standard air temperature measured in a Stevenson screen 1.5 meters above the ground. The difference between the grass minimum and the air minimum is greatest on clear, calm nights due to strong radiative cooling at the surface.
