The vertical distance of a point or object above a reference surface, typically mean sea level. In meteorology, it is a fundamental geographical parameter that influences local climate, temperature, and pressure. Atmospheric pressure decreases approximately by 1 hectopascal for every 8 meters of elevation near sea level.
