Eliassen-Palm flux

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010491

A vector quantity used in atmospheric dynamics to diagnose the propagation and dissipation of planetary waves and other atmospheric disturbances. It represents the flux of wave activity and momentum in the atmosphere. The divergence of the Eliassen-Palm flux indicates where waves are depositing momentum into the mean flow, influencing atmospheric circulation patterns.
