Kuo-Eliassen equation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010586

A second-order partial differential equation that describes the balanced, slow, transverse circulation in a rotating, stratified fluid, such as the atmosphere. It is used to diagnose the secondary circulation in frontal zones and jet streams, relating the forcing from temperature and momentum fields to the resulting vertical and horizontal motion. The equation assumes geostrophic and hydrostatic balance for the primary flow.
