Equilibrium theory
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005440
A simplified theory of tides that assumes the ocean instantaneously responds to the gravitational forces of the Moon and Sun, forming a bulge of water directly beneath and opposite the celestial body. This theory neglects dynamic effects such as ocean depth, basin shape, and the Coriolis force. It provides a basic understanding of tidal patterns.
