Linear water wave theory

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006985

A simplified mathematical model used to describe the behavior of surface gravity waves on water, assuming small wave amplitudes relative to wavelength and water depth. This theory linearizes the governing fluid dynamics equations, allowing for analytical solutions for wave speed, dispersion, and particle motion. It is applicable for waves where the wave height is much less than the wavelength, typically less than 5%.
