Linearity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006986

The property of a system or mathematical relationship where the output is directly proportional to the input, and the principle of superposition holds. In a linear system, the response to a sum of inputs is the sum of the responses to each individual input. Many atmospheric processes are approximated as linear for analytical simplicity, especially when considering small perturbations around a mean state.
