Fanning
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000950
A plume behavior observed when stable atmospheric conditions, such as an inversion layer, prevent vertical mixing of pollutants from a stack. The plume spreads horizontally in a narrow band, resembling a fan, with minimal vertical dispersion. This can lead to high concentrations of pollutants downwind at ground level.
A pattern of plume dispersion in a stable atmosphere, in which the plume fans out in the horizontal and meanders about at a fixed height.
