Fingerprint method
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005584
A statistical technique in climate change detection and attribution that compares observed spatial and temporal patterns of change with the pattern, or fingerprint, that climate models predict for a specific cause such as rising greenhouse gases. The comparison weights the data to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, using estimates of natural internal variability. A close match indicates that the forced signal has emerged from natural variability.
