Frontal strip
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005810
A narrow, elongated band of enhanced potential vorticity located along the tropopause, directly above a surface front. This feature is a product of the interaction between stratospheric air with high potential vorticity and the strong vertical and horizontal wind shear associated with the jet stream and the frontal zone. The position and intensity of the upper-level frontal strip are closely linked to the process of cyclogenesis and the development of surface weather systems.
