Frontogenesis
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001090
The atmospheric process involving the formation or intensification of an atmospheric front, characterized by an increase in the horizontal temperature gradient. This occurs when air masses with different temperatures are brought closer together by atmospheric flow patterns, such as convergence or shear. It leads to the development of distinct frontal boundaries.
1. The initial formation of a front or frontal zone. 2. In general, an increase in the horizontal gradient of an airmass property, principally density, and the development of the accompanying features of the wind field that typify a front.
