Frost action

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005817

The physical weathering process where water seeps into cracks and pores in rocks or soil, freezes, and expands, exerting pressure that can break apart the material. Repeated cycles of freezing and thawing cause cumulative damage, leading to the disintegration of rocks and the heaving of soil. This process is particularly active in cold climates.
