Congelifraction
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004594
The process of rock weathering caused by repeated cycles of freezing and thawing of water within cracks and pores. As water freezes, it expands, exerting pressure on the surrounding rock and eventually causing it to fracture. This mechanism is prevalent in periglacial environments and contributes to the formation of scree slopes and blockfields.
