Weathering
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010191
The breakdown and alteration of rocks, soils, and minerals at or near the Earth's surface through contact with atmospheric elements like temperature and water, as well as biological organisms. It is a surface process that does not involve the movement of material, which distinguishes it from erosion. The two main types are physical weathering, such as frost wedging, and chemical weathering, such as the dissolution of limestone by acidic rain.
