Frost heaving

The upward displacement and distortion of soil and structures due to the expansion of ice lenses forming within the ground. This process occurs when water in the soil freezes and expands, pushing overlying material upwards. It can cause considerable damage to roads, foundations, and utility lines in cold climates.
