Frost line

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005829

The maximum depth to which the ground is expected to freeze during the coldest part of the year. This depth is influenced by factors such as air temperature, soil type, moisture content, and snow cover. Building codes often specify minimum foundation depths based on the local frost line to prevent structural damage from frost heave.
