Frost depth

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005824

The vertical distance from the ground surface to the deepest point at which the soil temperature is 0°C (32°F) or below. This measurement indicates how far the ground has frozen during a cold period, which affects soil moisture, infrastructure, and plant roots. Frost depth is influenced by air temperature, snow cover, soil type, and moisture content, with measurements ranging from centimeters to several meters in permafrost regions.
