Ground ice
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006086
A body of ice formed in or on the ground in perennially frozen regions (permafrost). It includes several forms, such as pore ice filling the voids in soil, segregated ice lenses or layers that grow by drawing in water, and massive wedge ice that forms in thermal contraction cracks. The melting of ground ice due to climate warming or surface disturbance contributes to land subsidence and the formation of thermokarst terrain.
