Thermokarst topography

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009613

A landform characterized by irregular surfaces of marshy hollows and hummocks, resulting from the thawing of ice-rich permafrost. As ground ice melts, the ground subsides, creating depressions that can fill with water to form thermokarst lakes. This process is particularly prevalent in Arctic and sub-Arctic regions where permafrost is widespread.
