Gully-squall

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006125

A sudden, strong downdraft of wind that is channeled through a narrow valley, ravine, or gully, causing a localized and intense squall. These winds are produced when cool, dense air from a thunderstorm's outflow or a katabatic flow accelerates as it is funneled by the surrounding terrain. The constriction of the landform concentrates the airflow, leading to a rapid and sometimes hazardous increase in wind speed at the gully's exit.
