Heavy water
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006206
A form of water in which the hydrogen atoms are replaced by deuterium, a heavier isotope of hydrogen. In atmospheric science and paleoclimatology, the ratio of heavy water (HDO) to regular water (H₂O) in ice cores, ocean sediments, and other natural archives serves as a proxy for past temperatures. This is because the lighter H₂O molecule evaporates more readily, leaving the isotopic ratio in precipitation dependent on temperature.
