Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006277

The greatest distance at which a black object of suitable dimensions, situated near the ground, can be seen and recognized when observed against the horizon sky. It is a measure of atmospheric transparency along a horizontal path and is reduced by the presence of fog, mist, haze, precipitation, or other obscuring particles. For aviation purposes, this value is reported in statute miles or meters and is a primary component of a Meteorological Aerodrome Report (METAR).
