Mist

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001731

  1. A suspension of very small, visible water droplets in the air, reducing visibility to a lesser extent than fog. It forms when water vapor condenses near the ground, often in conditions of high humidity and light winds. Visibility in mist ranges from 1 kilometer to 10 kilometers, whereas fog reduces visibility to less than 1 kilometer.

  2. A visible aggregate of minute water particles suspended in the atmosphere that reduces visibility to less than 7 statute miles, but greater than or equal to 5/8 statute miles. It does not reduce visibility as much as fog and is often confused with drizzle.
