Obstruction to vision

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007653

Any phenomenon in the atmosphere, other than precipitation, that reduces horizontal visibility. These obstructions are categorized based on their composition, such as lithometeors (dust, sand, haze), hydrometeors (fog, mist), and electrometeors. Weather reports use specific codes to denote the type of obstruction, like HZ for haze or FG for fog, when visibility drops below certain thresholds.
