Hydrophyte

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006346

A plant species that has adapted to living either partially or fully submerged in water, or in soil that is permanently saturated. These plants possess specialized structures, such as aerenchyma tissue for internal air transport and buoyancy, or finely dissected leaves to maximize surface area for nutrient absorption. Hydrophytes are integral to wetland ecosystems, where they influence local water cycles and humidity levels through high rates of evapotranspiration.
