Phreatophyte
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010666
A plant with a deep root system that habitually obtains its water supply from the permanent water table or from the capillary fringe above it. These plants are adapted to arid and semi-arid environments where surface water is scarce but groundwater is accessible. Examples include mesquite and saltcedar, which can significantly influence local water budgets through their high rates of transpiration.
