Independent variable

A variable in an experiment or model that is manipulated or changed by the researcher, and whose effect on another variable is being measured. In atmospheric science, examples include solar radiation, greenhouse gas concentrations, or sea surface temperature when studying their impact on climate. It is often plotted on the x-axis of a graph.
