Independent pixel approximation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006485

A simplification used in remote sensing and radiative transfer models where each pixel in an image is treated as an independent entity, without considering interactions or correlations with neighboring pixels. This approximation reduces computational complexity but can introduce errors when dealing with heterogeneous scenes or complex atmospheric scattering. It is often applied in satellite retrievals of atmospheric properties.
