Infrasound
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006550
Sound waves with frequencies below the range of human hearing, generally less than 20 hertz. These waves can travel thousands of kilometers through the atmosphere, making them useful for detecting distant natural phenomena like volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and severe thunderstorms, as well as anthropogenic events. Specialized microphones are required to detect these low-frequency pressure fluctuations.
