Loop Current

A warm ocean current that flows northward into the Gulf of Mexico, loops clockwise, and then exits through the Florida Straits to become the Florida Current. This current is an extension of the Yucatán Current and is characterized by its deep, fast-moving waters. Eddies, known as Loop Current Eddies or rings, frequently detach from the main current and drift westward across the Gulf.
