Caribbean Current

A warm, fast-flowing ocean current that transports a large volume of water northwestward through the Caribbean Sea. It originates where the South Equatorial Current flows along the coast of South America, enters the Caribbean basin, and exits through the Yucatán Channel into the Gulf of Mexico. This current is the primary source of water for the Gulf Stream, transporting roughly 30 Sverdrups (30 million cubic meters per second).
