Warm-core rings
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010090
Mesoscale ocean eddies that detach from major ocean currents, such as the Gulf Stream, and contain a core of warmer water than the surrounding ocean. These rings rotate clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and can persist for several months, transporting heat, salt, and marine organisms. They are typically several hundred kilometers in diameter.
