Cold-core rings
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004510
Cyclonically rotating ocean eddies, roughly 100 to 300 km across, that pinch off from the Gulf Stream on its southern side and carry a core of cold slope water into the warmer Sargasso Sea. Their isotherms dome upward at the center, the reverse of the depressed isotherms in warm-core rings. They drift slowly southwestward and decay over a period of months to a few years.
