Cold-air pool
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004509
A mass of cold, dense air that settles in a low-lying area, such as a valley or basin, under stable atmospheric conditions. This air is cooler and heavier than the surrounding air on higher ground, causing it to drain downslope under the influence of gravity, particularly on clear, calm nights. These pools are responsible for localized frost and fog formation, with temperatures inside the pool being significantly lower than on the adjacent slopes.
