Air drainage

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003377

The flow of cold, dense air down a slope or through a valley under the influence of gravity. This phenomenon occurs most often on clear, calm nights when the ground cools rapidly, chilling the air immediately above it. Air drainage can lead to localized frost formation in low-lying areas, even when surrounding higher elevations remain above freezing.
