Air discharge
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003376
An electrical discharge that occurs through the air, which normally acts as an insulator. This phenomenon happens when the electric field strength across a volume of air exceeds its dielectric strength, causing the air to ionize and become electrically conductive. Lightning is the most powerful and well-known form of natural air discharge, but it also includes smaller-scale events like corona discharge from pointed objects.
