Pool of cold air

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008060

A localized mass of relatively cold, dense air that settles in a topographic depression, such as a valley or basin, due to radiative cooling at night. This phenomenon is common in mountainous regions under clear, calm conditions, leading to temperature inversions where the coldest air is near the ground. Such pools can contribute to frost formation and localized fog development.
