Gulf Stream rings

Large, rotating eddies that pinch off from the main body of the Gulf Stream. Warm core rings form on the northern side, trapping Sargasso Sea water, while cold core rings form on the southern side, trapping shelf water. These rings can persist for months and significantly impact local oceanographic conditions and marine life.
