Maelstrom

A large, powerful whirlpool in the sea, the best known being the Moskstraumen in the Lofoten Islands of Norway, a tidal current system that produces strong eddies and whirlpools dangerous to small boats. The name comes from Dutch words meaning grinding stream, and it has been applied loosely to other violent whirlpools. Meteorologists do not use it as a technical name for any type of storm or vortex.
