Masked front

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007128

An actual front that cannot easily be seen on the surface analysis, because local effects such as radiation conceal its usual signs. One winter case arises when mild marine air meets cold air stagnating under an inversion, so the ground-level temperature may rise after the front passes. Low-level air behind such a front is then milder than the air above it.
