Mathematical climate
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007138
The climate an idealised Earth would have if latitude and the solar radiation received were the only controls, so that temperature zones would follow circles of latitude. It ignores land and sea contrasts, atmospheric and ocean circulation, and topography, and it is close to what is called the solar climate. Real temperatures depart from it because oceans and land redistribute heat; the Gulf Stream, for example, keeps northwestern Europe far warmer than its latitude alone would give.
