Mean solar day

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007166

The average time it takes for the Earth to complete one rotation relative to the mean sun, which is a fictitious sun that moves at a uniform rate along the celestial equator. This period is exactly 24 hours and forms the basis of our civil timekeeping. It differs slightly from the apparent solar day due to the Earth's elliptical orbit and axial tilt.
